about

When Kevin Braheny Fortune and I began discussing the update to my 1975 Serge that would transform it into the Mystery Serge, we debated whether the machine should keep its original layout grid, and therefore its "original Serge" appearance, or be altered by drilling new holes in it.

"It's a living instrument," I said, "so let's do everything we can to update it." And so a classic has evolved.

Four decades after my synthesizer rolled off the production line, Serge is still going strong, maybe even stronger than ever. Vintage instruments are still vital and inspiring; new versions improve on original designs; the DIY community keeps "the people's synthesizer" legacy of Serge close to its heart.

The New Serge Musician's Tape, Vol 1. is an expression of the living instrument's vitality that pays respect to the original Serge Modular Music Company's in-house cassette release, Serge Musician's Tape (1983) by continuing its name and the cassette release format.

I am honored to be featured on the first volume of a cassette series that will celebrate Serge players old and new, from around the world, performing on the many generations and types of Serges that have evolved.

My thanks to my wife Collette Lynner, to the curators of the Church of The Super Serge concert series, Dmitri SFC and Elise Gargalikis, Steve Taormina of Robotspeak, who hosts the event and Serge Tcherepnin.
